The SLACLALS short story competition is organized by the Sri Lanka Association for Commonwealth Literature and Language Studies with funds provided by the Commonwealth Foundation through SLACLALS’s parent body ACLALS.
The names of the winner and the two runners up will be announced on the SLACLALS website. They will be invited to the SLACLALS Conference to be held in June 2013 during which they will receive their prizes. The winning entry will be published in Phoenix: Sri Lanka Journal of English in the Commonwealth Volume X (2013).

Authors agree:
All those who have not been successful are automatically granted back first serial rights when the winner and runners-up are announced.
Opening date: 1 February 2013
Closing date: Online entry forms and entries must be submitted by 15 March 2013.

Eligibility, Rules and Submission Guidelines
Please take time to read the following. Submission of an entry is taken as acceptance of the entry rules.
- This competition is only open to a) existing SLACLALS members over the age of 18 and b) students reading English for a degree at any of the island’s State Universities.
- If a person under category “b” wins the competition, or is a runner-up, he/she will be required to become a member of SLACLALS if he/she is not a member already.
- The entry must be in English.
- Word limit: 2000-5000 (maximum).
- Story to be emailed as a Word document or a PDF.
- Font size: 12 point, Times New Roman or Arial, preferably.
- Please avoid decorative fonts. Leave one inch margins on each side.
- Short story to be submitted with a completed application form found on the SLACLALS website.
- No poetry, novel chapters, drama, or stories for children will be accepted.
- Include your name, email address and telephone number as a footer on each page.
- Ensure that pages are numbered consecutively.
- Entries to be submitted by email only. Hard copies will not be accepted.
- Simultaneous submissions are not allowed. Strictly, one entry per individual.
- All submissions must be original and unpublished.
- Retain a copy of your entry. Once received, entries will not be returned.
- The decision of the SLACLALS committee will be final. No correspondence will be entertained.
- Member of the SCLALALS committee and their immediate families are not eligible to enter the competition.
Authors agree:
- to grant SLACLALS the right to publish the short story before anyone else in print or online
- to grant SLACLALS non-exclusive rights to your work, including the right to include the short story in a journal
- to grant SLACLALS the right (but not the obligation) to store the short story indefinitely
